During our Thanksgiving break we toured downtown Houston for an afternoon! It was so cold, but we loved seeing the hot spots of the city and learning a little bit more about the history of Houston.

This year for Thanksgiving we were lucky enough to have Mom, Dad and Ben come visit us in Houston! I've been taking some cooking classes and absolutely enjoyed cooking the "big meal" for everyone! I was proud that nothing came out burned and that everything was hot at the same time! We had a wonderful time. The accidental possum viewing was the most hysterical thing of all. We were talking about how the possums sneak up to our windows at night and peek in and right when Trever said that, we spotted one outside our door. We all saw it just before it dashed out into the dark! Between that and swimming snakes I think everyone was convinced that the Texas wildlife is a whole other world! Oh the joys of living in Texas!

Trever and I celebrated his 30th on 10/22/09. My Rocky Road Cake didn't turn out as usual, but it still tasted good!

After much research this year Trever started a new job about 45 min. north of downtown Houston. We moved to The Woodlands this last month and are LOVING it!

There is much work and clean-up to be done in the city! It is amazing to see what severe damage several hours of a storm can do to the environment. I can only imagine what Galveston and the areas closer to the coast look like and what the people there are dealing with!

Our apartment manager was kind enough to open our BBQ so that we could cook our soon to go bad goods! It was fun to hang out with our friends and talk about our experiences.

Our power and water went off around midnight Friday night! We tried to get some air movement in our place, but it was just not happening. The nights were the hardest trying to sleep in the heat and humidity. We have learned a lot through all of this and are grateful that we had the emergency items that we did. We definitely have a newfound appreciation for water and electricity! Our water came back on Sunday night.....a good shower never felt so good! And our power just came on a couple hours ago (Monday night)! We had plenty of bottled water and tried to eat up the things in our fridge quickly. There is such a different way of living and thinking with and without power and water. We are glad it didn't go on for the 2-3 weeks that is was predicted to be!

We napped on and off the rest of the morning as the winds and rain died down. Once we woke up again, we were anxious to get out and see our surroundings. There were quite a few people out and about checking things out. Everyone curious as to the damage done by Ike! Here are a few pics around our apartment!

Trever and I are happy to report that we survived the hurricane in one piece. Friday evening seemed long as we waited for the storm to come. We were glued to the news and could feel the weather increasing in intensity minute to minute. Around 8:00 p.m. the power started flickering on and off and eventually stayed off. By 12:30 a.m. we were so tired and decided to try and sleep a little. We both fell asleep only to wake up around 2:00 a.m. to howling winds and lightening. We've never heard anything like it. You could just feel the intensity of the storm and how extremely powerful it was. We tried to sleep on and off but didn't sleep much. We wished we could have seen what was going on outside but even peeking out the windows, all we could see was a mist of rain.

We woke up around 7:00 a.m. and the winds were still blowing strong. It was hard to open our porch door and the rain was very heavy. Here are a few pictures looking out our porch at that time.

Ike!

Well, we were determined to experience Houston to the fullest and here we are in the middle of Ike! We feel like we are prepared for whatever may come and are excited to see what this storm brings. Trever and I both have the weekend off and are "hunkering down" in our apartment. So far the weather has been very mild. It just feels like a windy day. We expect to see the worst of things around 11pm-3am. It has been interesting to see how the city gears up for weather like this! As we drove around today, most businesses had boarded up or taped their windows. The gas stations are out of gas. And the grocery stores are closed. We are so glad that we have on hand the necessary supplies we need in case of a major power outage. We appreciate everyone checking up on us and are thankful for your love. We will try to keep this blog updated frequently during this storm for everyone as I'm sure there will be more to tell! This is a pic of our apartment. We are the third floor up on the right side. Hopefully a safe place to be since there isn't much exposure to the outside.

Houston!!!

Trever and I moved to Houston this last June and have been loving our Texas experience so far!! Even though it is humid, the weather definitely beats Vegas! We are living downtown near the medical center in a 700 square foot apartment! Perfect for the two of us. Trever is doing a residency in general dentistry at the University of Texas and I am working in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital! We are both learning lots!

We spend our free time roaming the city, going to nearby museums, going to the Miller Amphitheater for events, and finding fun places to shop and eat! One of our favorite restaurants is The Hobbit Cafe!! We plan to stay here in Houston for at least a year. In the meantime we are looking into our options for the future. It is wide open at this point!
